St. Rose of Lima (1586-1617), born Isabel Flores de Oliva, was the first person born in the Americas to be canonized a saint. A Dominican tertiary who lived in her parents' house in Lima, she devoted her short life to prayer, fasting, and care for the poor. She was canonized by Clement X on April 12, 1671, and declared patroness of the Americas, Peru, and the Philippines. Her feast is August 23 (August 30 in Peru and some Latin American countries). Her skull, crowned with roses, is displayed in the Basilica of Santo Domingo in Lima, alongside the relics of her friends St. Martin de Porres and St. John Macías. Her birthplace shrine, the Santuario de Santa Rosa de Lima, is a separate pilgrimage site.
