St. Mariam Baouardy (5 January 1846 – 26 August 1878), known in religion as Sister Mary of Jesus Crucified, was an Arab Melkite Greek Catholic mystic and Discalced Carmelite nun who founded the Carmel of Bethlehem, the first Discalced Carmelite house in Palestine. Orphaned young and illiterate all her life, she was marked by the stigmata and by frequent reported ecstasies, and the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem calls her "Patron of Peace" for the Holy Land. She died in Bethlehem at thirty-two and was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015.
Life
She was born on 5 January 1846 at Ibillin (Abellin), a village in Galilee between Nazareth and Haifa, into a Melkite Greek Catholic family. Orphaned at the age of three, she received no schooling and never learned to read or write. At thirteen she refused an arranged marriage, and in her years of domestic service she survived an attack in Cairo in which her throat was cut.
She entered the Carmel of Pau in France, where she received the name Mary of Jesus Crucified. From 1870, while still a novice, she joined the founding party of a new Carmel at Mangalore in India, professing her vows there on 21 November 1871, and returned to Pau in 1872.
In 1875 she led a group of nuns from Pau to the Holy Land to found the Carmel of Bethlehem — the community dates its foundation to 20 August 1875. The foundation stone of the monastery was laid on 24 March 1876 on the hill known as David's Hill, overlooking Bethlehem, the site chosen to recall the royal lineage of Christ; the building was inaugurated in November 1876, and its church was finished and consecrated in 1892, after her death. She was the only Arabic-speaking sister in the founding community and oversaw the building work herself. During that work she fell and broke her arm; gangrene followed, and she died in Bethlehem on 26 August 1878, aged thirty-two.
She also pressed for a Carmel at Nazareth, telling the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem that God desired a house there in honour of the Incarnation, and she travelled to Nazareth in 1878 to help acquire the property. Rome authorised the foundation that same year, shortly before she died, but she did not live to see it built: the first stone at Nazareth was laid on 28 July 1907, and eleven Carmelites came from Bethlehem on 27 October 1910 to begin what became the Carmel of the Holy Family.
She bore the stigmata and was reported to fall frequently into ecstasy. Because she could not write, her spiritual teaching was dictated and transcribed by others; theologians approved these writings in 1924.
Veneration
Pope John Paul II beatified her in St Peter's Square on 13 November 1983, and Pope Francis canonized her there on 17 May 2015.
Her cult remains local as well as order-wide. The 150th anniversary of the Bethlehem Carmel, kept at the monastery on 26 August 2025, drew clergy, Carmelite friars, members of the Third Order and faithful especially from Ibillin, her native village; the Latin Patriarch used the occasion to announce a first Arabic translation of her writings, The Little Nothing. In her own region an elementary school and a junior high school at Ibillin bear her name.
Patronage
The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem honours her as Patron of Peace for the Holy Land.
Feast Day
26 August — the day of her death, on which the Carmel of Bethlehem and the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem keep her feast, and the date given for the universal calendar. The Discalced Carmelite order keeps her on 25 August in its own calendar.
Relics
Her tomb is in the church of the Carmel of Bethlehem (the Carmel of the Holy Child Jesus), on the Hill of David opposite the Church of the Nativity. The Carmelite order describes the tomb as a place of pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims alike. A small museum at the monastery shows her cell and personal belongings; the chapel and museum are open to visitors, while the sisters themselves live enclosed.
