Blessed Dorothy of Montau (Dorota z Mątowów, 1347-1394) was a Prussian mystic, wife, and anchoress venerated as patroness of the Diocese of Elbląg and of Pomerania. She is remembered as the only stigmatist among Poland's saints and blesseds, and her cult centers on the co-cathedral of Kwidzyn, where she had herself enclosed as a recluse in the last year of her life.
📜 History & Spiritual Significance
Dorothy was born on 6 February 1347 in Mątowy Wielkie, near Malbork, the daughter of Dutch settlers, and baptized the same day in the village's parish church. At sixteen she was married to a Gdańsk armorer and spent three decades in that marriage, a devotion to prayer and penance her husband did not share. Widowed, she left Gdańsk in 1391 for Marienwerder, the cathedral town now called Kwidzyn, where the canon Johannes von Marienwerder became her confessor and recorded her visions in a Latin biography, the Septililium. In 1393 she asked to be walled into a small cell against the cathedral's wall, living the final thirteen months of her life as an anchoress. She died there on 25 June 1394.
Formal canonization proceedings, opened soon after her death, stalled for centuries. On 9 January 1976, Pope Paul VI signed a decree of equipollent beatification, confirming her ancient, unbroken cult rather than opening a new process. A thanksgiving Mass followed on 13 December 1976 at Oliwa Cathedral in Gdańsk, the city of her marriage. In 1992, Bishop Andrzej Śliwiński, first bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Elbląg, named her its patroness.
Her relics did not survive the Reformation: Bishop Paul Speratus is recorded as having them removed from the cathedral around 1544. A 2008 excavation beneath the cathedral's presbytery, conducted by Nicolaus Copernicus University, found a grave that may once have held her — it was empty, and the relics have never been recovered.

Dorothy is invoked as patroness of Pomerania, the Diocese of Elbląg, women, mothers, difficult marriages, and metalworkers, and is depicted in art with a rosary and a lantern.

Her feast falls on 25 June, her dies natalis, and is kept in the Archdiocese of Gdańsk, the Archdiocese of Warmia, and the Diocese of Elbląg, where it is an obligatory memorial.
