The Panaholma river comes out of the Sierras Grandes and runs into the dry Valle de Traslasierra, about 140 kilometres west of the city of Córdoba, over the mountains; on its bank stands a town that carries a parish priest's name. Villa Cura Brochero was Villa del Tránsito until 1916, when it took the name of the priest who had ridden its mule tracks for four decades — in Argentina, a town named for its cura rather than for its patroness is close to unique.

What pilgrims come for is set into a wall inside the parish church: the bones of José Gabriel del Rosario Brochero in an urn, and with them, in glass, the brain his doctors found preserved when the grave was opened. A fragment of it has travelled the province as a relic, chosen to stand for the intelligence and the vision of the man.

He was a priest who worked from the saddle, and pilgrims come to him the way he went to them, by the roads. The shrine's invitation to its September walk asks them to "walk together in faith, praying to Saint Brochero": they arrive on foot over the twenty-eight kilometres of the Camino del Peregrino, on horseback in the March cabalgata from Córdoba, and by the Altas Cumbres road in cars and buses.

📜 History & Spiritual Significance

José Gabriel del Rosario Brochero was born in 1840 on a farm outside Villa Santa Rosa, in the flat country east of the sierras, and was ordained at Córdoba. In 1869 he was sent over the mountains as vicar of San Alberto, the department that is today the Valle de Traslasierra — a parish without roads, bridges or schools, which he crossed on a mule.

He built what the valley lacked. The Casa de Ejercicios Espirituales, opened in 1877, let him bring country people over the Sierras Grandes in parties of hundreds to make the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius, two days' ride each way through the cold of the Pampa de Achala. He opened a school for girls, cut more than sixty roads through the hills, and dug the canal that brought the Panaholma's water down to the town's fields. The letters in which he asked for ordination and described the work are printed in Guillermo Carlos Recanati's El Cura Brochero: su opción por la pobreza al servicio de los pobres.

Caring for the sick, he contracted leprosy. It took his sight and then his hearing. He resigned the parish in 1908 and went to his sisters at Villa Santa Rosa; he came back at his parishioners' asking, and died in the town on 26 January 1914.

On 17 March 1967 the Holy See authorised the process to open in the archdiocese of Córdoba rather than in the diocese of Cruz del Eje, where he had died. He was declared venerable, a healing was recognised as miraculous through his intercession, and on 14 September 2013 he was beatified in Villa Cura Brochero itself, before a crowd of between 150,000 and 200,000 people. He was canonized in Rome on 16 October 2016. In December 2023 the Córdoba Legislature declared him patron of the province, alongside Nuestra Señora del Rosario del Milagro and San Jerónimo.

☩ Pilgrimage Sites in Villa Cura Brochero

Two of the places a pilgrim comes for share one block, which the town calls the Manzana Brocheriana — the parish church and the Casa de Ejercicios that became the Museo Brocheriano. The house he lived in is a short walk away, and a short walk from the historic centre is a figure of Christ cut from white quartz from Pocho, one of the stops the province counts on its circuit of faith.

Shrine of Our Lady of the Transit

Santuario Nuestra Señora del Tránsito

The parish church holds the body of Saint José Gabriel Brochero. The grave was opened in 1973 for the canonical process and the body was found largely intact; the bones were laid in an urn of algarrobo wood and the preserved brain and soft tissue in glass, and in 1994 both were moved into the wall the church shares with the Casa de Ejercicios, carried there in a procession of more than four hundred priests and sixteen bishops. For the beatification ceremony in September 2013, an artisan carved a large reliquary in algarrobo wood in the form of Brochero on horseback, holding a fragment of the preserved brain; it now stands in the Capilla San José Gabriel at the Predio La Providencia. Pilgrims pray before the urn and ask his intercession for the sick and for their own journeys. Mass times: see the shrine's website.

Brochero Sculpture Park

Parque Temático Brochero Santo

On the Costanera by the river, at the Predio La Providencia, ten groups of life-size figures tell Brochero's life. They are set out in the shape of a rosary, so that walking the park is walking the beads.

Los Chiflones Aqueduct

Acueducto Los Chiflones

The canal Brochero began carried the Panaholma's water some three kilometres to the fields; its ruins lie in open country at the paraje Los Chiflones, on the municipality's circuit of his irrigation works, a walk of about four kilometres there and back.

🕯️ Annual Feast Days & Celebrations

Feast of St José Gabriel Brochero — 16 March

His birthday is the patronal feast. A novena of dawn rosaries, the Rosario de la Aurora, runs through the nine days before it. On the eve the Cabalgata Brocheriana arrives, riders and walkers who have come some two hundred kilometres from Córdoba over the sierras. The day keeps Masses morning and evening, a procession with the relics through the streets, and a festival of music in the plaza.

The Camino de Brochero Pilgrimage — September

Each September the shrine and the municipality walk the twenty-eight kilometres of the Camino del Peregrino together, from the Giulio Cesare parking ground on the Altas Cumbres road down into the town, five to seven hours on foot and in the company of thousands. Residents of the San Alberto department walk without charge. First-aid and water posts stand along the way, and the walk is called off in rain; the date moves with the year, and the shrine's own site carries it.

Anniversary of the Canonization — 16 October

The day he was named a saint is kept in the town.

Anniversary of His Death — 26 January

The day he died is marked at the shrine.

🛏️ Where to Stay

Hostería de la Villa (guesthouse) — Family-run for more than thirty years, where the Mina Clavero and Panaholma rivers meet, within walking distance of the church. Website

Mina Clavero, three kilometres downstream, carries most of the valley's rooms, cabins and apartments and is the usual base for a longer stay.

🚗 Getting There

By Car: From the city of Córdoba, about 140 km west on RN 20 across the Camino de las Altas Cumbres, then RP 14 down into the valley. Roughly three hours.

By Bus: Buses run from the Córdoba city terminal to the terminal in Villa Cura Brochero; Panaholma and Coata work the route. Tickets and timetables through Plataforma 10.

On Foot: The Camino del Peregrino comes down from the Altas Cumbres road into the town, 28 km — see Pilgrim Routes below.

Local Transport: Mina Clavero lies 3 km away, Nono 8 km and Villa Dolores 48 km, all on the valley road.

🥾 Pilgrim Routes

Camino del Peregrino — 28 km from the Giulio Cesare parking ground on RP 34, at km 105 in the Pampa de Achala, down to Villa Cura Brochero, following the track Brochero rode with his mule caravans. Eight stations mark it, each under a tall marker: Giulio Cesare, La Lagunita, Puente Arroyo Zárate, La Vertiente, Villa Benegas, Balcón Chico, Puente del Cura and El Carrizal; the Santuario de la Providencia is where the walk ends, beyond the last of them. A pilgrim's passport, free, is stamped at each station. The path is open through the year and may be walked, ridden or cycled. It is a hard day — six hours and more, with no certain mobile signal.

The Way of Brochero — 240 km in fifteen stages, joining the three towns of his life: Villa Santa Rosa, where he was born; the city of Córdoba, where he studied; and Villa Cura Brochero, where he worked and is buried. It is twinned with the Camino de Santiago, and Argentina lists it among the country's intangible cultural heritage.

🪶 Closing Reflection

"Now the gear is on, and I am ready for the journey. What is left stays in the mercy of Jesus Christ. I know the devil had notes of debt written out against me. But with this, Jesus Christ has torn up his papers, and nobody collects on a spoken word."

— St José Gabriel Brochero, after receiving Viaticum, recorded by Fr Pío Angulo, 1914
