Above the market town of Šmarje pri Jelšah, in eastern Slovenia, a stone path zigzags up Predenca hill to the church of St Roch, passing fourteen Baroque chapels set at intervals along the climb. Each holds life-size figures of one scene of Christ's Passion. The parish priest Matej Vrečer, a mathematician, had them built between 1743 and 1753 and planned the ascent with care (kam.si: Sv. Rok nad Šmarjem pri Jelšah).
The church at the top is plain outside and rococo within, in stucco and fresco. The parish church in the town below is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, and the parish belongs to the Diocese of Celje (Župnija Šmarje pri Jelšah). The two chief pilgrimage gatherings on the hill are the Assumption and the feast of St Roch on 16 August.
📜 History & Spiritual Significance
The name of the place is first written down in 1236, in Latin, as Sancta Maria. The parish's own short history gives two legends behind the name as it reads now. A great lake once filled the Šmarje valley, and on its island the Scapular chapel was built, from which the name "Marija na jezeru"—Mary on the lake—is said to come. The church and the other houses of the market town stand on petrified alders, jelše in Slovenian, from which "Šmarje na Jelšah" is said to derive. Because the manor to the west is named after the alders as well—Jelše, or Jelšingrad—the place came to be called Šmarje pri Jelšah (Kratka zgodovina župnije).
In 1645 two men of Šmarje carried plague home from Ptuj to Breclovo, a village of the parish, and it spread through the whole parish; in a short time more than two hundred people died. A chapel was raised on the hill in the hope that the scourge would be turned aside. The thanksgiving written afterwards on the wall inside the church records that the prayers were heard through the intercession of the Mother of God, St Roch and St Sebastian, and it names its witnesses—Luka Grbec, formerly parish priest here, and Janez Jožef Sonce, commissar of Šentjur, with all the people of Šmarje and the neighbouring parishes. The inscription is dated 10 April 1646 (kam.si: Sv. Rok nad Šmarjem pri Jelšah).
St Roch is honoured as a patron against plague, which is why churches and wayside shrines across these lands carry his name. The chapel on the hill above Šmarje grew into a church, and in the next century the parish priest Matej Vrečer had the chapels of the Way of the Cross built along the path up to it, drawing more pilgrims to the climb. He saw to their Baroque furnishing as well, so that those who came found the Passion of Christ set out at life size, chapel by chapel.
