The road from Alytus climbs a low rise above Lake Ilgis, and the wooden church of Pivašiūnai comes into view before the village does: a long white body of squared timber with a brick portico of four columns pushed against its front, like a porch borrowed from a manor house. A wooden bell tower faces it across the churchyard, and between them the carved crosses of Dzūkija — oak, roofed, thin as masts — lean at their own angles in the grass.
Inside, above the high altar, a Mother and Child are painted on beech boards. Mary sits crowned with a sceptre in her hand; the Child raises two fingers in blessing. Where the image came from nobody can say — one telling has it found in a forest, another carried out of Turkey — and it came through the fires that took the churches standing on this hill before this one. Pilgrims know her as Nuliūdusiųjų Paguoda, the Consoler of the Afflicted, and small silver hearts, hands and legs hang beside her, left by people whose prayers were answered.
The altar is of a kind a pilgrim can walk behind, a form seldom found elsewhere in Lithuania, and during the Assumption the file of people passing around it does not break for hours. Lithuanians call the feast Žolinė, from žolė, grass: they bring herbs, grain and garden flowers to be blessed, and the eight days around 15 August draw one of the largest gatherings in the country onto this hilltop.
📜 History & Spiritual Significance
The estate came to the Church by testament. Jonas Klockis, an official of Kaunas, left Pivašiūnai to the Benedictine monks of Senieji Trakai, who had already sent a priest to the place, and the monks built a wooden church on the hill. War destroyed it. A second church was consecrated by the bishop of Vilnius and did not outlast the century. The church that stands there now was raised at the initiative of the Benedictine abbot Celestinas Saraka in 1825, and the monks held the parish until the middle of that century. It carries three titles: the Assumption of Mary, St John the Baptist for Klockis's own patron, and St Benedict.
The painting is older than the building around it — mid-seventeenth-century work by an unknown Lithuanian hand, Mary seated and crowned in the manner icon painters call Regina Coeli. A gilded silver revetment was fitted over it a few years after a fire in the parish, which the shrine reads as evidence that the image was already renowned for miracles by then. Votive offerings gathered around it: hammered silver plaques in the shape of a heart, a hand, a leg, one for each grace asked and received.
On the eve of Žolinė in 1988, Cardinal Vincentas Sladkevičius crowned the painting with crowns blessed by Pope John Paul II and gave the image its title, Consoler of the Afflicted. The preparations were made quietly, under a state that had no use for such gatherings, and the shrine tells the crowning as the moment when a private grief and a national one were named together. Since that August the fifteenth day of every month has been kept here in the Consoler's honour.
From the eighteenth century a trade fair ran beside the church during the feasts, where Jewish and Tatar merchants sold cucumbers, pears, apples and berries while pilgrims drank from barrels filled at the churchyard spring.
The longest-serving pastor of Pivašiūnai, Alfonsas Petrulis, was one of the twenty men who signed Lithuania's Act of Independence in 1918. He preached and taught catechism in Lithuanian in a parish whose life ran in Polish, founded a Lithuanian choir, and helped found Aušra, a Lithuanian newspaper published every two weeks to promote the language in the churches of the Vilnius region. A monument to him was unveiled in the churchyard during a Žolinė.

A wooden church on a Latin-cross plan, its four-column portico built of brick, the interior white and gilt. The miraculous painting hangs above the high altar, and the altar can be walked behind — the rare form that shapes how the feast moves through the building. Carved wooden statues line the walls, and the votive plaques hang near the image. Outside, the bell tower faces the façade and the churchyard keeps its old Dzūkija crosses. In the valley below, the Pakalnės chapel marks the ground where the earlier churches stood. The crafts centre beside the church bakes bread and cake, makes candles, and keeps workshops in wood, wicker, clay and cloth.

Žolinė, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — 15 August
The feast is kept as an octave, 14 to 22 August, and each day of it is given to a different body of people — families, the sick, farmers, teachers, priests and religious, the young — with the year's assignment published by the parish. On 15 August herbs, flowers and the first fruits of the harvest are blessed, a harvest thanksgiving older than the Christian feast that absorbed it. Women of the parish's outlying villages plait the wreaths of oak, rue and thuja that dress the church for the octave, some of them more than eight metres long. On the evening of 14 August the shore of Lake Ilgis holds music, dancing and fireworks, and a craft and food fair runs beside the church through the week that follows.
Walking Pilgrimage from Alytus — 17 August
Pilgrims set out at 9:00 from the church of the Holy Guardian Angels in Alytus and walk to Pivašiūnai. The walk is open to anyone.
Our Lady, Consoler of the Afflicted — the 15th of each month
The parish keeps the fifteenth of every month in honour of the crowned image. A plenary indulgence is available on the usual conditions: the state of grace, Communion, prayer for the Pope's intentions, and the resolve to turn from sin.

🚗 Getting There
By Car: Pivašiūnai sits on regional road 220, which runs Trakai–Rūdiškės–Pivašiūnai–Alytus. Alytus is about 25 km southwest, Daugai 11 km south, Vilnius about 100 km north. Parking on the hilltop fills during the octave, and a car is the practical way to arrive.
By Bus: A suburban route links the Alytus bus station with Pivašiūnai, some services running by way of Daugai. The parish publishes the current departures on its own page for pilgrims. There is no direct coach from Vilnius; travel by way of Alytus. No railway reaches the village.
On Foot: A stage of the Lithuanian Way of St James runs between Pivašiūnai and Alytus, and the August pilgrimage from Alytus walks the same ground.
