A Baroque basilica on a ridge above the Rhine Valley with Lake Constance views, marking a 1629 Marian apparition.
On a sunny ridge high above Vorarlberg's Rhine Valley, a Baroque pilgrimage church offers one of the finest panoramas in western Austria. From Maria Bildstein, the eye sweeps across Lake Constance to the Swiss Alps and the forested peaks of the Bregenzerwald. Pilgrims have climbed here since a Marian apparition in 1629, passing wayside crosses, stations-of-the-cross chapels, and Mary's Well on paths that wind up from the valley floor. The church that Bregenz master builder Michael Kuen designed between 1662 and 1676 ranks among the finest early Baroque structures in the Lake Constance region. In 2018, Pope Francis recognized its significance by elevating it to a minor basilica—honoring nearly four centuries of continuous pilgrimage to this mountain sanctuary.
In 1629, a vision of the Virgin Mary on this mountain ridge set in motion a devotion that has never ceased. Within decades, the faithful were climbing from Bregenz and Dornbirn to pray at the site. The present church, built between 1662 and 1676, gave permanent architectural form to the apparition's legacy. Michael Kuen designed the early Baroque structure dedicated to the Visitation of Mary—recalling the Gospel account of Mary's journey to visit Elizabeth after the Annunciation. The twin towers were added in 1838, completing the silhouette that now defines Bildstein's skyline. The interior features fourteen Stations of the Cross depicted as small Baroque altars in the nave conches—a unique presentation that transforms the church itself into a via crucis. Pilgrims can walk the Passion without leaving the sacred space. Pope Francis elevated Maria Bildstein to a minor basilica in 2018, recognizing the shrine's importance to the faithful of Vorarlberg and the wider Lake Constance region.
Basilica of Our Lady of the Visitation The early Baroque church crowns the ridge with twin towers visible from the Rhine Valley. Inside, the high altar enshrines the object of veneration while the nave's fourteen station-altars invite meditation on Christ's Passion. The views from the church terrace extend to Lake Constance and three countries. Address Bildstein 50, 6858 Bildstein GPS 47.4447, 9.7892 Map Google Maps Web bildstein.at
