Around 1670, a resident of nearby Szulec commissioned a painting of the Holy Family as a votive offering to St. Joseph, and the Sanctuary of St. Joseph grew up around it.
Today, Kalisz's Sanctuary of St. Joseph serves as Poland's national center of devotion to St. Joseph. The miraculous painting of the Holy Family—showing Joseph, Mary, and the Christ Child—hangs above the high altar, drawing pilgrims who seek the intercession of the patron of workers, fathers, families, and the dying.
For pilgrims seeking St. Joseph's intercession, Kalisz offers the rare opportunity to venerate at a shrine that predates the great Josephite devotional movement of the 19th century—a place where the foster father of Jesus has been honored continuously for over three and a half centuries.
📜 History & Spiritual Significance
The collegiate church at Kalisz was founded in 1155 by Prince Mieszko III the Old, dedicated to St. Paul and confirmed by papal brief in 1218. In 1353, Archbishop Jarosław Bogoria Skotnicki re-founded the church under the dedication of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the dedication the sanctuary carries today.
The painting commissioned around 1670 was placed in that church, by then the Collegiate Church of the Assumption (a minor basilica since 1978). Its recognition as grace-working came in 1767, and as miraculous in 1770, launching the devotion that made Kalisz a national center of veneration to St. Joseph.
The sanctuary's standing grew over the centuries. In 1796, the image was solemnly crowned by Bishop Michał Kościesza Kosmowski, delegate of the Holy See. Pope Pius IX declared St. Joseph patron of the universal Church in 1870, and in 1962 Pope John XXIII added St. Joseph's name to the Canon of the Mass.
Pope St. John Paul II, who had a deep devotion to St. Joseph, visited the sanctuary on June 4, 1997, celebrating Mass on the basilica plaza and blessing the seminary.
