Ciudad Eten

On 2 June 1649, the vigil of Corpus Christi, in the parish church of Santa María Magdalena at Eten — a town on the dry coastal plain of Lambayeque, in northern Peru — the figure of a child appeared in the consecrated host raised before the people. It is the one Eucharistic miracle recorded in Peru, and the town is known for it: Ciudad Eten, the Eucharistic City. aci prensa+1

The hosts in which the Child was seen are not preserved. What the pilgrim comes to is the parish church on the town's main square, where the Blessed Sacrament is adored in the church in which the Child was seen. For the second half of July the town fills for the festival of the Divine Child of the Miracle, which drew more than thirty thousand visitors in 2019. aci prensa+1

During the Mass of the vigil of Corpus Christi, 2 June 1649, those present in Eten's parish church saw the figure of a child in the consecrated host. On 22 July, the feast of Santa María Magdalena, the parish's patron, the Child appeared a second time, and the vision resolved into three hearts interlaced, understood as a sign of the Trinity. aci prensa+1

The devotion that grew from 1649 has no relic at its centre. It has the Eucharist itself: pilgrims come to adore the Blessed Sacrament in the church where it was once seen with a child's face. The Church marked the 375th anniversary with a Jubilee Year, from 22 July 2024 to 22 July 2025, and a plenary indulgence was granted to pilgrims who made their way to the parish church. aci prensa

The Mass of the Promise is offered in the parish church on the first Saturday of each month, and hundreds of pilgrims come for it; the cape of the Child is changed, the Rosary is prayed, and confessions are heard before it. The festival in honour of the Divine Child of the Miracle and of Santa María Magdalena fills the second half of July, its principal days 22 and 23 July, each with Mass and a procession through the town. In 2025 Peru's Congress declared it of national interest to recognise the district of Eten as the Ciudad Eucarística del Perú, the Eucharistic City of Peru, on the ground of the accord between Peru and the Holy See, and named the promotion of local custom and of religious tourism among the purposes. The declaration is a civil one and carries no canonical recognition. The parish patron's feast, and the principal day of the July festival: Mass and a procession through the town. The second apparition of 1649 fell on this day.

Mass of the Promise — First Saturday of each month

Misa de Promesa, in the parish church. The Child's cape is changed, the Rosary is prayed, and Mass is offered; hundreds of pilgrims come.

Pilgrimage of the Eucharistic Miracle, from Monsefú — September

The pilgrimage in memory of the apparition sets out from Monsefú, the neighbouring town, in the morning and walks to Ciudad Eten; the image of the Niño Peregrino and a great Bible are carried on the shoulders of the faithful, September being kept as the month of the Bible in the diocese of Chiclayo, and at midday the Mass of the Promise is offered in the parish church on the main square. It is organised by the confraternity of Santa María Magdalena and the Divine Child of the Eucharistic Miracle together with the diocese.

🚗 Getting There

By Air: The nearest airport is Captain FAP José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzáles International Airport (CIX), in Chiclayo, with domestic flights from Lima of about an hour and twenty minutes on LATAM, JetSmart and Sky; onward travel to Ciudad Eten continues by road.

By Bus: Civa, Cruz del Sur, Oltursa and other interprovincial carriers run the Panamericana Norte highway from Lima to Chiclayo, a journey of some twelve to fourteen hours; from Chiclayo, local combis and taxis cover the remaining distance to Ciudad Eten.

By Car: Ciudad Eten lies 18 km south of Chiclayo by road.
