St. Augustine

On August 28, the Church honors Augustine of Hippo (354-430), the North African bishop whose Confessions and City of God shaped the Western mind more deeply than any other Father of the Church. Born to a pagan father and the Christian Monica at Thagaste (modern Souk Ahras, Algeria), he pursued rhetoric at Carthage, taught at Milan under the patronage of the imperial prefect, and was there baptized by Ambrose on the night of Easter 387 — the moment his mother Monica had prayed and wept for through seventeen years.

Returning to Africa, he was ordained a priest at Hippo (modern Annaba, on the Algerian coast) and made bishop in 395, a charge he held until his death in 430 as the Vandals besieged his episcopal city. The basilica at Annaba, the Basilica of St. Augustine, was built by the French in the 1880s on the hill believed to overlook the ruins of ancient Hippo; its design echoes the saint's own description of the episcopal church. Pilgrims there look across the bay toward Carthage, where Augustine was formed, and toward the inland hills of Souk Ahras, his birthplace.

Augustine's mortal remains left Hippo during the Vandal occupation and, by a long medieval passage through Sardinia and Pavia, came to rest in the Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in that Lombard city, where the Arca di Sant'Agostino holds them. Dante, in the Paradiso (X.121-129), places Augustine among the great lights of the heavenly sphere of the Sun, and it is in Milan — where the conversion took place in a garden under a fig tree, a site now lost beneath the modern city, though the fourth-century baptistery beneath the Duomo preserves the stones of his Easter 387 baptism — that pilgrims trace his decisive year. The Order of Saint Augustine, the mendicant fraternity tracing its rule to the saint's common life, carries his name into every continent; its mother church in Rome, Santa Monica degli Agostiniani, is dedicated to the mother whose prayers won his conversion. Two days after his election on 8 May 2025, Pope Leo XIV — Robert Francis Prevost, the first Augustinian and the first American-born pope — made his first journey outside the Vatican a private pilgrimage to the Augustinian Sanctuary of the Mother of Good Counsel at Genazzano, south of Rome, where he prayed before the order's miracle-working fresco of the Virgin.
