Święta Lipka

Święta Lipka, a small village in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship of northeastern Poland, is nestled in the historic Masuria region between the scenic Dejnowa and Wirowe lakes, surrounded by wooded hills. Located approximately 6 km southeast of Reszel and 13 km southwest of Kętrzyn, this tranquil village of fewer than 200 residents is renowned as one of Poland’s most significant Marian pilgrimage sites, often called the “Częstochowa of the North.” Its name, meaning “Holy Linden,” derives from a legendary linden tree bearing a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary, a tradition dating back to the 14th century. Despite its destruction during the Protestant Reformation, the sanctuary was rebuilt by the Jesuits in the 17th century, becoming a beacon of Catholic faith in a predominantly Lutheran region. The Baroque basilica, with its iconic moving pipe organ, attracts pilgrims and tourists seeking spiritual renewal and architectural splendor.

📖 Description / Highlights:

The Sanctuary of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, is the heart of Święta Lipka. Built between 1688 and 1693, the basilica features a three-nave layout, a two-tower façade, and arcaded cloisters with corner chapels. Its interior dazzles with frescoes, stone and wooden sculptures, and a 17th-century painting of Our Lady of Święta Lipka at the high altar, replacing a miraculous statue from the 14th century. The sanctuary’s famous pipe organ, constructed in 1721, captivates visitors with moving figurines of angels and stars, animated during daily concerts. A legend tells of a condemned prisoner, freed after carving a Marian statue under divine inspiration, placing it on a linden tree that became a site of miracles. Designated a Minor Basilica in 1983 by Pope John Paul II, it draws over 100,000 pilgrims and tourists annually.
